Mette's Journey: Two Decades at TARGIT

In 2004, Mette Hylle Jespersen was faced with a big career decision. She had spent six years in the accounting department of an industrial company that was now planning to relocate hours away from her home. Rather than make the move, Mette chose to stay in her community and explore new opportunities. 

She heard about TARGIT from a friend she played handball with and decided to apply for a bookkeeping position. This decision began a remarkable 20-year journey at TARGIT, packed with twists, turns, and an evolving role that has left her an indispensable fixture of the company. 

The Start of a New Chapter

When she first joined TARGIT in July 2004, Mette’s days were spent doing all those crucial things that keep the financial wheels turning — think invoicing, chasing debtors, and ensuring the bank statements reconciled. However, the dynamic nature of TARGIT allowed her to grow professionally from the very beginning. 

"TARGIT’s Finance Director left the company at the end of 2004. I took over many new tasks in that period including payroll, which I have handled ever since," Mette recalls. Over time, more responsibilities were added to her plate, and eventually, Mette's role shifted from just bookkeeping to reporting, budgeting, and human resources (HR) tasks as well.  

Since then, Mette has seen a lot of change. "When I first started, I think there were about 25 employees in Denmark and only two in the U.S.," she remembers. Despite the changes over the years, one thing is still the same: TARGIT's commitment to fostering a flat organizational structure where employees collaborate across teams and leaders are in touch with day-to-day operations. 

"Even though we have grown over the years, we still have a flat organization where everyone can talk to everyone," Mette explains. “It's great to be part of it — there isn't a big gap between the top and the bottom.” 

A Role That Evolved With the Company

Mette has witnessed and helped steer TARGIT through some significant transformations over the years. Her official title at TARGIT is “Controller,” but her responsibilities include bookkeeping, internal and external reporting, budgeting, various controls, payroll processing, bonus calculations, employment contracts, and more. Reflecting on the changes in her role, Mette notes, "I didn't have any prior experience with payroll processing and HR when I started, but today, I’m involved in almost all HR tasks for both Denmark and the U.S.."  

Mette’s positive attitude and warm personality are felt all throughout the office. Finance Assistant Birgitte describes Mette as “always very helpful,” and Office Manager Tine shares, “The first words that come to me are mega-engaged, super talented, and a really lovely colleague. Also, she has the biggest sweet tooth and always has an excuse to go to the candy drawer!” 

Her journey has been full of continuous learning as she adapts to TARGIT's changing business needs and strategic focus. For example, she took on several new reporting and compliance responsibilities when TARGIT became a part of GRO Capital back in 2017. "There have been more requirements for our reporting, which has required and still requires system adjustments," she explains. The evolution of her role is a testament to both TARGIT’s dynamic nature and Mette’s own adaptability.

Looking to the Future

Two decades is no small feat. And yet, when Mette reflects on her time at TARGIT, it’s with a sense of forward momentum. She's excited about several ongoing projects, such as the company’s transformation from Perpetual Software to Cloud, expansion into new markets, and initiatives to digitize and automate internal systems. 

And when it comes to her own future, Mette is happy to continue her TARGIT journey. "Even though I've been in the same position for 20 years, I don't feel like it's stagnant. I think I've learned a lot." For Mette, the opportunity to constantly evolve within her role is what makes her career so fulfilling.
